Job purpose
Provide engineering design, costs, plans, and specifications for construction of new facilities and reconditioning or altering of existing systems and equipment. Provide discipline-specific services for the plant, working closely with other departments to define the scope, urgency, and schedule of assigned work. May lead a major project or direct the design on major projects engineered at the plant or at a contractor’s office.
The position will act in accordance with the Group’s Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines and international standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, and HSE standards.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Defines scope, estimates costs, and provides detailed engineering design for plant additions and modifications, and coordinates engineering, design and drafting work done by others.
- Manages project budgets by controlling costs, approving expenditures, administering contractor contracts, and negotiating proposals.
- Maintains schedule by evaluating project plans and specifications, calculating time requirements, allocating and forecasting resources, and sequencing project elements.
- Reviews the work of, and provides guidance for, a contract engineering staff.
- Provides technical expertise plus engineering consulting and troubleshooting services to the plant, and reviews project feasibilities and provides innovative uses of technology.
- Assists in maintaining and updating plant standards, and may serve on a company standards committee and/or as the company’s technical representative to a Process Industry Practices (PIP) committee.
- Writes specifications for equipment/services, evaluates vendors’ bids, selects equipment and approves purchase requisitions for their projects.
- Prepares Appropriations Requests and provides project cost control and management, and reports to management on project expenditures and provides information for economic forecasting and capital planning.
- Monitors progress of construction projects in the field, and checks for conformance to design and specifications, assisting in start-up as needed.
- Prepares project status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends, and then recommending actions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education requirements
- BS degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university or an engineering degree with applicable project engineering experience
Background Experience
- Two years of project engineering experience is required.
- Project estimating and scheduling experience
- Drafting/design techniques experience
Preferred
- Five or more years of project engineering experience.
- Experience in leadership or chemical plant operations.
- Proficiency in several Plant Engineering activities
Competencies and Skill
- Effective oral and written communications skills
- Computer use and applications knowledge
